Job Description

In-House legal team handles all non-covered litigation, which includes unlawful detainers, employment suits, habitability claims, and real estate matters. They also provide advice and respond to general legal inquiries that arise during the company's operations. The In-House Counsel will mainly oversee the unlawful detainer docket, with opportunities to work on other legal matters within the department.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage unlawful detainer actions, including preparing discovery, engaging in motion practice, and trial preparation.
  • Conduct research and address various legal questions from company staff related to property management.
  • Represent the company in motion/ex parte hearings and trials.
  • Assist in resolving pre-litigation disputes.
  • Review and update lease-related documents, property management forms, and other company documents.
  • Help manage the legal department by maintaining an organized case docket, overseeing administrative staff, coordinating with company staff on various projects, and handling other legal issues.
  • Collaborate with General Counsel on tasks related to the non-UD civil case docket, including employment suits, habitability claims, real estate matters, and other legal issues that arise within the department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of legal experience with a litigation background, preferably in unlawful detainers.
  • Proficiency in all aspects of discovery, including written discovery, depositions, and third-party subpoenas.
  • Experience preparing for trial, with a preference for unlawful detainer trial experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain an organized and orderly caseload.
  • Willingness and ability to adapt and learn on the job.
  • Collegial and professional demeanor.
  • Member in good standing of the California bar.
